Choosing the right color combination of grout and tiling can make a big difference in the final installed look. In some situations a high contrast is desired such as a very light colored tile and a very dark grout. This is seen in some restaurants and commercial bathrooms as well. When choosing the color of the tiling also consider the grout color and how they will contrast or compliment each other. A very common look is to have a complimentary shade of grout. This is seen in many homes, especially tract homes where they are built by model. Here are some other considerations to consider are:
- Light colored grout will show stains easier than a dark grout.
- It is important to seal your grout to prevent permanent staining.
What about DIY Do it Yourself Tiling?
If you are inclined toward DIY – then tiling may be just the thing for you. You can rent a tile saw or buy one. There are attachments for electric drills that can help mix thin set and grout quickly. Installing your own tile involves a lot of mixing of thin set. Having the right tools and materials like spacers and a good quality level can make all the difference when it comes to getting a professional look. It is best to start at the far end of the room and work your way back so you do not have to put your weight on the newly laid pieces as you go. Use your level as you add each piece to make sure you are keeping a good leveling. You may have to remove a tile after you place it to either add or remove thin set in order to keep a flat surface going. After some practice you will find the process goes much smoother as you learn to better estimate the amount of thin set to add to each tile. With a little planning and the right technique your Do it yourself tiling DIY project will be a big success that you will be proud of.
Leveler – an important consideration!
If your base floor is not smooth and flat, as is often the case with concrete foundations where there are craters and cracks, then you are going to need to use leveler material. Leveler is mixed and then poured onto the raw concrete. Leveler only needs a minor amount of smoothing to “self-level” the floor giving you a smooth and perfectly flat surface to install upon. You can not skip leveling! When installing a hardwood floor, such as nail down hardwood with a plywood sub floor, leveling is not so critical as the plywood sub floor
provides a flat surface and conceals the flaws of the slab. But in the case of tile installation leveling is an absolute must! It is nothing to get intimidated by, just mix leveling in a bucket and mix with a drill attachment in the same manner as thin set before applying thin set and tiling.
